How to Import Natural Stone from India to USA — A Practical Guide for US Buyers

Practical guide for US stone importers, landscaping companies and wholesale distributors buying natural stone direct from India. Covers shipping terms, transit times, container costs and how to find a real manufacturer.

Natural sandstone and limestone paving slabs exported from Rajasthan India to USA landscaping and construction projects

Most US stone importers who start buying directly from India say the same thing afterwards — they wish they had done it sooner. The process is more straightforward than it looks from the outside, the quality gap versus domestic distribution is real, and the economics at container scale are difficult to argue with.

India is the world's largest natural stone exporter, and Rajasthan sits at the centre of that industry. The sandstone, limestone, marble and granite coming out of this region supplies buyers across the USA, UK, UAE, Europe and Australia. For US importers, landscaping companies, garden centres and wholesale distributors who have been buying through domestic stone yards, going direct to a Rajasthan manufacturer means better specification control, better margins, and a material range that no domestic distributor can match.

This is a practical guide to how the process actually works.

What makes Rajasthan stone worth importing

The geological conditions in Rajasthan produce stone of consistent quality across the varieties that US buyers specify most. Dense silica and iron oxide mineral composition — the same composition that gives stones like Kandla Grey and Agra Red their distinctive appearance — is what makes them structurally reliable for outdoor use across US climate zones, from harsh New England winters to intense Southwest heat.

Beyond paving and cladding, Rajasthan's craftsmanship capability is something no other supply market matches at the price point. Skilled stone carvers producing garden sculptures, ornamental fountains, custom architectural elements, stone benches and bespoke carved features to CAD drawings — at costs that make these elements commercially viable for US landscape architects working on high-end residential projects. A hand-carved stone feature that would be priced out of most US project budgets when sourced domestically or from Europe becomes a realistic specification when you are buying direct from Rajasthan.

The varieties US buyers specify most consistently:

Kandla Grey Sandstone for contemporary patios, pool surrounds and walkways. Cool grey tones, natural texture, works well in both modern minimal and traditional landscape settings. Consistent demand from US landscape architects across the country.

Mint Fossil Limestone for driveways, terraces and pool surrounds where a pale, smooth surface suits the design brief. Popular in higher-end residential projects where porcelain would be the alternative.
Agra Red Sandstone for heritage-influenced projects, feature walls, garden sculptures and entrance cladding. Deep warm reds with strong consistent grain. Strong specification on luxury residential and commercial projects.

Teakwood Sandstone for designers who want natural stone character with a distinctive wood grain pattern. Warm brown and cream tones in a contemporary application.
Rainbow Sandstone for garden feature walls and decorative landscape elements where multicolour variation in amber, rust and pink tones suits the planting and hardscape palette.
Indian Marble — white Makrana marble and multicolour varieties — for premium interior flooring, bathroom applications and outdoor feature elements on luxury projects.

How the import process works in practice

Finding the right supplier is the single most important decision. The distinction between a direct manufacturer with quarry access and a trading company that buys from multiple sources matters enormously for quality consistency, traceability documentation, and the ability to accommodate custom specifications. Ask directly — a legitimate manufacturer will tell you exactly which quarry your stone comes from and be able to show you the facility. A trading company often cannot.
Samples before any bulk commitment. No decision about a significant stone order should happen without physical samples — colour, surface texture, calibration accuracy and finish quality only come through in person. We ship free samples to US addresses within 5 to 7 working days. You cover the courier cost, we provide the stone.

Shipping terms. FOB Mundra means you arrange freight from the Indian port — more cost control for buyers with an established freight forwarder. CIF to your nominated US port means we handle freight booking and insurance — simpler for first-time importers. Door-to-door delivery to your US warehouse or site is also available if you want a single delivered price with all logistics handled.

Transit times from Mundra Port to US destinations on Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and MSC services run as follows. Los Angeles and Long Beach 18 to 22 days. New York and Newark 22 to 28 days. Houston 20 to 25 days. Miami 24 to 28 days. Savannah 22 to 26 days. These are consistent numbers on established routes — not estimates that require significant contingency.

Container sizing. A 20ft FCL carries approximately 20 to 22 tonnes of packed natural stone. A 40ft FCL carries 24 to 26 tonnes. For mixed orders combining paving slabs with ornamental or carved pieces, a 40ft container gives you the flexibility to bring meaningful variety in a single shipment. Most US importers who have done the freight cost calculation find 40ft containers more efficient per tonne.
US customs clearance. Natural stone from India imports under HS Code 6802. Duty rates vary by stone type and your customs broker will handle classification and clearance. Standard export documentation — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, quality certificate — is provided as standard from our end. A professional Indian exporter should have this documentation process running smoothly. If chasing documentation becomes part of the relationship, that tells you something about operational standards generally.

Cost structure. Sea freight on a 20ft container from Mundra to US West Coast ports currently runs in the range of 1,500 to 2,500 US dollars depending on the season and market conditions — East Coast ports run somewhat higher. US customs duty on natural stone runs 3 to 6 percent depending on the specific product classification. Customs broker fees typically run 300 to 500 dollars per shipment. These are ballpark figures — get a full landed cost breakdown from your supplier before comparing prices.

Building the relationship that makes direct importing work

The US buyers who get the most consistent value from Indian stone sourcing are those who treat it as a supply relationship rather than a transaction. Establishing shared quality standards, communicating your specification requirements clearly, ordering ahead of project demand rather than reactively, and building the kind of working relationship where problems get resolved rather than argued about.
A trial container — typically a 20ft FCL — is the right way to start. It is enough volume to properly evaluate quality, packaging, transit performance and the supplier relationship before scaling up. Most good relationships between US importers and Rajasthan manufacturers started with exactly this approach.
